Symptoms & Causes

Two Symptoms Account for Most Dishwasher Calls

It will not drain, or it will not clean. They look similar from the kitchen and they have completely different causes — which is why the diagnosis matters more than the part.

"A dishwasher that stopped cleaning well is far more often scaled up than broken. We check that before we quote you a pump."
  • Standing water, slow drains and F8 E4 / F9 E1 drain codes
  • Poor cleaning, gritty plates and cloudy glassware from Orlando hard water
  • Leaks at the door gasket, latch, drain hose or inlet valve
  • Machines that will not start or quit mid-cycle
  • Built-in, panel-ready, drawer and portable units
What Goes Wrong

Common Dishwasher Problems We Fix in Orlando

Two symptoms account for most dishwasher calls: it will not drain, or it will not clean. They have completely different causes.

01

Dishwasher Not Draining

The most common dishwasher fault there is. Standing water at the end of a cycle usually means a clogged filter or sump, a blocked drain hose, a failed drain pump, or — very often — a garbage disposal that was installed without its knockout plug removed. That last one traps every dishwasher on the circuit and takes minutes to fix once it is identified.

02

Dishwasher Not Cleaning the Dishes

If dishes come out with residue or grit, the water is not reaching them properly. Blocked spray arm holes, a clogged filter, a failed circulation pump or low inlet water temperature are the usual causes. In Orlando the leading culprit is scale: hard water deposits close up spray arm jets gradually until the machine is spraying at half strength.

03

Dishes Come Out Gritty, Cloudy or Filmy

Cloudy glassware and white film on plates is hard water doing its work. Central Florida water is hard enough that it shows up on dishes long before it shows up as a mechanical failure. The fix combines a descale, a rinse aid adjustment and sometimes a fill temperature correction — not a new dishwasher.

04

Top Rack Not Getting Clean

A distinctive symptom with a short list of causes: the upper spray arm is blocked, the feed tube that supplies it has come loose, or the diverter valve that alternates water between the racks has failed. The lower rack coming out clean while the top rack does not tells us exactly where to look.

05

Dishwasher Leaking Onto the Floor

Door gasket, door latch alignment, a cracked or loose drain hose, or the water inlet valve. Leaks under the unit can travel along the subfloor before they appear at the toe kick, so by the time you see water on the floor the leak has often been running a while. Treat it as urgent.

06

Dishwasher Will Not Start or Stops Mid-Cycle

Door latch switch, control board, thermal fuse or a float switch that thinks the tub is already full. If the machine starts and then quits partway through, it is usually the heating element or the thermistor stopping the cycle because the water is not reaching temperature.

Pro Diagnostic Tip

If a recently installed dishwasher has never drained properly, check the garbage disposal. Every new disposal ships with a factory knockout plug sealing the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be punched out before the drain hose is connected. It is the most commonly missed step in the entire installation, and it traps the dishwasher completely.

Dishwasher Repair

We repair built-in, panel-ready, drawer and portable dishwashers from every major brand. Drain pumps, circulation pumps, inlet valves, door gaskets, latch switches, heating elements and spray arms travel on the van.

  • Drain and circulation pumps, inlet valves, gaskets and control boards.
  • Full descaling service for Orlando hard water — the real cause of poor cleaning.
  • Complete cycle test before we leave: fill, wash, heat and drain.

The Orlando Hard Water Problem

Most of Orange and Seminole County runs hard water, and a dishwasher is the appliance that shows it first. Scale narrows spray arm jets, coats the heating element so it works less efficiently, and builds up in the filter and sump. A dishwasher that "used to clean better" almost never has a failed part — it has years of mineral deposit, and descaling it is faster and cheaper than any repair.

How It Works

Our 3-Step Repair Process

We don't just patch the problem; we identify the root cause to prevent future failures.

Step 01

Diagnostic Visit

We run a cycle, check fill, spray pressure, heat and drain, and isolate which stage is failing. Typically 30 to 45 minutes.

Step 02

Transparent Quote

Flat-rate price before any work starts. Approve it and the $79 diagnostic fee comes off the total.

Step 03

Precision Repair

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or OEM-equivalent part, then a full cycle test to confirm the machine fills, cleans, heats and drains. 30-day written warranty.

Service 02

Dishwasher Installation

We install built-in, panel-ready and drawer dishwashers — including the drain line high loop and, yes, removing the garbage disposal knockout plug.

Service 03

Dishwasher Maintenance / Tune-up

In Central Florida, dishwasher maintenance is mostly a fight against scale. A machine descaled once a year cleans better, heats more efficiently and lasts noticeably longer.

Between Visits

  • Clean the filter monthly — two minutes, and it is the number one thing owners skip.
  • Do not pre-rinse dishes to spotless: modern detergents need some soil to work against.
  • Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle so the machine fills hot from the first minute.

The 50% Rule

Repair your dishwasher if the fix costs less than 50% of a comparable new unit and the machine is under 7 years old. Replace it if the tub is cracked, the racks have corroded through, or the control board has failed past 9 years. Dishwashers last 9 to 12 years — shorter than most kitchen appliances, so age matters more here.

AEO Guide

Before you replace it over poor cleaning: a dishwasher that stopped cleaning well is far more often scaled up than broken. A descale and spray arm clearing costs a fraction of a new appliance and resolves most of these cases.

FAQ

Dishwasher Repair FAQ

How much does it cost to repair a dishwasher in Orlando?
Most dishwasher repairs run between $130 and $500, parts and labor included. Clearing a clogged filter and drain line sits at the low end; a circulation pump or control board at the high end. You get a flat-rate quote before any work begins.
Why is my dishwasher not draining?
Standing water at the end of a cycle usually means a clogged filter or sump, a blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. On recently installed machines it is very often a garbage disposal whose knockout plug was never removed, which blocks the dishwasher drain line completely.
Why is my dishwasher not cleaning my dishes properly?
The water is not reaching the dishes with enough pressure. Blocked spray arm jets, a clogged filter or a failing circulation pump are the usual causes. In Orlando the most common of all is hard water scale gradually closing up the spray arm holes — a descale usually restores it.
What does the F8 E4 error code mean on my Whirlpool dishwasher?
F8 E4 is a drain fault: the control board detects water still in the tub when the cycle should have emptied it. The cause is normally a clogged filter or sump, a blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. It is one of the repairs we most often complete the same day.
Is it worth repairing a dishwasher?
Repair it if the fix costs under half a comparable new machine and the unit is under 7 years old. Dishwashers last 9 to 12 years, so age matters more here than with other appliances. Pumps, valves and gaskets are worth fixing; a cracked tub is not.
Can you install a new dishwasher as well as repair mine?
Yes. We install built-in, panel-ready and drawer dishwashers, including the water line, drain routing with a proper high loop, electrical connection, leveling and a full leak test. And we remove the garbage disposal knockout plug, which is the most commonly missed step in the job.
