Ice makers fail in a small number of predictable ways. Here is how to read the symptom before you call.
Start with the obvious: the fill tube can freeze solid, the shut-off arm can be knocked into the off position, and the water supply valve behind the fridge can be closed. If all three are fine, the fault is normally the water inlet valve, the ice maker module itself or a failed thermostat. Most of these are same-day repairs.
Cubes fusing into one block in the bin is the classic sign of a door seal problem or a dispenser chute that keeps thawing and refreezing. The auger motor and the dispenser solenoid are the other two usual suspects. If your ice comes out as a single mass, the machine is making ice fine — it is the delivery side that failed.
Countertop units use a different design entirely: a small compressor, a water pump and a set of evaporator fingers. When they stop producing, it is usually scale on the evaporator, a failed water pump, or a compressor that has given up. We tell you honestly which of the three, because on inexpensive countertop models only one is worth fixing.
Almost always the water filter or the supply line, not the ice maker. Filters have a service life of about six months and Orlando water is hard enough that they load up faster than the label suggests. A stale bin, a filter past its date, or a plastic supply line that has been sitting warm behind the fridge are the three causes we find.
Overfilling points to the water inlet valve failing to close or the fill level sensor misreading. Water on the floor points to a cracked supply line or a loose connection. Either way it needs attention quickly — a slow leak behind a refrigerator can damage flooring before anyone notices it.
Low water pressure, a partially blocked inlet valve, or a filter that needs changing. Hollow cubes mean the mold is not filling completely before the harvest cycle runs. It is a cheap fix and usually one of the fastest calls we take.
Before you call, check three things: is the shut-off arm in the down position, is the water supply valve behind the fridge fully open, and is the fill tube frozen solid? A hair dryer on low will thaw a fill tube in ten minutes. If all three check out, the inlet valve or the ice maker module has failed and it needs a technician.

Repair the ice maker if it is built into a working refrigerator, or if it is an undercounter or commercial unit — in all three cases the repair costs a small fraction of replacement. Replace it only if it is an inexpensive countertop model with a failed compressor, where a new machine costs less than the repair.
