Nine out of ten dryer calls in Central Florida come down to airflow or heat. Here is how to tell which one you have.
If the drum turns and the air feels warm but clothes stay damp, the problem is almost always airflow, not heat. A blocked lint screen, a crushed transition hose or a clogged vent line traps humid air inside the drum. In Orlando this happens faster than in drier states because the outside air is already saturated. Clearing the vent often fixes it outright.
On electric dryers the usual culprits are a burned-out heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed high-limit thermostat. On gas dryers it is the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. A thermal fuse rarely fails on its own — it blows because the vent was blocked, so we always check the vent before we replace it.
This is the classic thermal fuse or igniter failure. The motor still turns the drum, so the machine looks fine, but nothing is producing heat. It is one of the fastest repairs we do and one of the most common calls we take.
A snapped drive belt is the number one cause; worn drum rollers, a seized idler pulley or a failed motor come next. If you hear the motor humming without the drum moving, do not keep running it — you can burn out the motor.
Partial airflow restriction. The dryer works, just badly, and your power bill shows it. Long or crushed vent runs are common in Orlando townhomes and apartments where the dryer sits in an interior closet with a long duct to the exterior wall.
A dryer that overheats and trips its own safety switch is telling you the exhaust cannot escape. This is the failure mode that starts house fires, so treat it as urgent. We will find the restriction and test the cycling thermostat before returning the machine to service.
Before you assume the dryer is dying, disconnect the vent hose from the back and run the machine for one minute. If the airflow at the wall port is weak, the problem is the vent, not the dryer.
