Everything looks normal — the light comes on, the turntable spins, the timer counts down — but the food stays cold. That is a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor. On a built-in or over-the-range unit it is worth repairing; on a cheap countertop model it usually is not, and we will say so before you pay for a diagnostic.
Dead panel and no light points to the door interlock switches, a blown line fuse or the control board. Interlock switches are the most common of the three: they are safety devices that prevent the microwave from running with the door open, and they wear out with use.
The turntable motor, the drive coupler underneath the glass plate, or debris jammed in the track. It is the least serious microwave fault and often the cheapest fix — sometimes it is just the coupler seated wrong.
Stop using it. Arcing is usually caused by a burned or peeling waveguide cover, food debris carbonized on the cavity wall, or damaged interior paint exposing bare metal. It is repairable, but continuing to run the unit will damage the magnetron and turn a modest repair into a replacement.
A magnetron on its way out, a failing cooling fan, or the turntable motor. A microwave that has become noticeably louder than it used to be is usually telling you something is failing rather than already failed — worth looking at before it stops entirely.
The door latch assembly or the interlock switches. Because those switches are what allow the unit to run at all, a worn latch presents as a microwave that works intermittently or cuts out partway through. It is a common failure on over-the-range units that get slammed shut for years.
