Two of the most common disposal faults you can often fix yourself in five minutes. We would rather tell you how than charge you for it — here is the honest version.
Silence means no power reaching the motor. Press the red reset button on the underside of the unit first: it trips on overload and it is the fix for a large share of these calls. If reset does nothing, check the breaker and the wall switch. If all three are fine, the motor or the internal wiring has failed and the unit needs replacing.
The motor has power but the impeller is jammed — usually by a bone, a fruit pit, a piece of cutlery or fibrous vegetable waste. Turn the unit off at the wall, then use the hex wrench that came with it in the socket underneath to work the flywheel free by hand. If it will not budge or it re-jams immediately, the bearings have likely seized.
A disposal that jams over and over is usually worn: dull impellers, a corroded grinding ring, or bearings on their way out. It can also be a habits problem — coffee grounds, eggshells, potato peel and fibrous vegetables are the four things that clog disposals most. We will tell you which one you have.
Where it leaks tells you what failed. From the top flange it is the sink mounting seal, and it is repairable. From the side it is the dishwasher inlet or the discharge pipe connection, also repairable. From the bottom of the housing it is a cracked or corroded body — that unit is finished and needs replacing.
The disposal itself may be fine and the drain line clogged downstream. Grease is the usual cause: it goes down warm, cools in the pipe and hardens. If both sink basins back up, the problem is in the shared drain, not in the disposal.
Rattling is normally something metallic that should not be in there. A constant grinding vibration points to a broken impeller or a failing motor mount. If the noise appeared suddenly and the unit still runs, shut it off and check before you use it again.
Two fixes solve a real share of disposal calls and take five minutes. If the unit is silent, press the red reset button on the underside. If it hums without turning, switch it off at the wall and use the hex wrench in the socket underneath to rock the flywheel free. If either works, you just saved a service call — and we would rather you know that than not.

Replace the disposal if the housing leaks from the bottom, the motor is dead, or the unit is more than 8 years old. Repair it if the problem is a jam, a reset trip, a sink flange seal or a discharge connection. Disposals last 8 to 12 years, and because the unit itself is inexpensive, a new one is often the honest answer on an older machine.
A leak from the bottom is always a replacement. It means the housing has corroded through — there is no seal to renew and no gasket to change. Anyone who quotes you a repair for that is selling you something that will leak again.
